Ambira Community Seedbank

On January 14, 2025, the Ambira Community Seedbank was officially opened, marking a significant step towards empowering local farmers and fostering sustainable agriculture. The event, graced by Mr. Isaac Munyendo, County Director of Agriculture from the County Government of Siaya, brought together farmers from Ambira, Got Osimbo, and Sijimbo villages to celebrate this monumental achievement.

A Collaborative Effort for Community Resilience

The establishment of the Ambira Community Seedbank is a testament to the power of collaboration. Seed Savers Network, in partnership with Tembea Futures Institute, played a pivotal role in bringing this project to life. By providing technical expertise and facilitating community engagement, these organizations ensured that the seedbank would serve as a vital resource for preserving indigenous seeds and promoting biodiversity.

Empowering Farmers

The seedbank aims to empower farmers by providing access to a diverse range of high-quality, locally adapted seeds. This initiative not only enhances food security but also supports climate resilience by preserving traditional seed varieties that are well-suited to local conditions. Farmers from Ambira, Got Osimbo, and Sijimbo expressed their enthusiasm and commitment to utilizing the seedbank as a cornerstone of sustainable farming practices.
