Planning for World Soil Day 2024: A Collaborative Effort in Siaya County
At Tembea Futures Institute, we believe in fostering sustainable agricultural practices and promoting soil health as a cornerstone of food security and environmental conservation. On November 19, 2024, stakeholders gathered at the Distinction Hotel in Siaya County to plan the forthcoming World Soil Day, slated for December 5, 2024. This year’s theme, "Caring for Soils: Measure, Monitor, and Manage," underscores the need for deliberate and informed action to ensure healthy soils for future generations.
Meeting Highlights
The meeting, chaired by Mr. Isack Munyendo, Director of the Department of Agriculture, Food Security, Livestock, and Blue Economy, focused on key areas crucial for the success of the event.
Site Selection
After evaluating various farms in Ugunja, Gem, and Ugenya sub-counties, the team unanimously chose Karadolo Sub-location in Ugenya, Ukwala Location, as the venue. This decision was based on:
- Adoption of Soil Health Technologies: Two farmers from the same homestead in Karadolo have implemented innovative soil health practices.
- Accessibility: The site is easily reachable for both participants and equipment.
- Capacity: The location offers adequate space for hosting the community baraza (gathering) and event activities.
Budget and Sponsorships
A proposed budget of KES 1.3 million was presented, with significant contributions already committed:
- GIZ will cover critical items such as tents, banners, T-shirts, decorations, fliers, and certificates for Community Resource Persons (CRPs).
- Tembea Futures Institute will sponsor a radio talk show to mobilize communities. The talk show will feature representatives from the County Department of Agriculture, GIZ, and soil testing institutions, highlighting strides made in soil health and its impact on agricultural productivity.
Steering Committee Formation
To ensure seamless coordination, a five-member committee was formed:
- Mr. Ambajo - County Focal Person
- Jared Ayien - WHH Representative
- Joshua Amollo - Tembea Futures Institute Representative
- Purity Obwar - GIZ Representative
- Mr. Ombati - Sub-County Agricultural Officer (Ugenya)
This team will oversee event planning, implementation, and follow-ups, including finalizing the guest list and engaging stakeholders.
